The call: Soon it will be too late…

Kairos relays the appeal that some of us have signed, also circulated by Médiapart « Soon it will be too late… What to do in the short and long term? »

We have heard the call of more than 15,000 scientists from 184 countries published on November 13, 2017, in which they sound the alarm on the disastrous state of our planet. We understand that this is the last warning, because if we do not take the appropriate measures  » soon it will be too late « .

We, ecologists, alterglobalists, growth objectors, and degrowthists, wish to draw the practical consequences of this call, since it is soon « too late », it is now that we must act. No one has ready-made answers today, but we know that we need to change the dominant paradigm. The way out is not through austerity and growth, but rather through a break with productivism, extractivism, blissful faith in techno-science, authoritarianism and capitalism.

We must change our modes of production and existence, because they are at the origin of the current situation, and the collapse of resources could lead us to barbarism. But we are not starting from nothing, we know that alternatives already exist on a global scale, which must be brought together; we also know that the dream of the 99% is not to imitate the 1%, contrary to what the dominant would have us believe.

We must change our modes of production and existence but we know that tomorrow must be better than today while immediately dividing by three our CO2 emissions and preserving ecosystems. We don’t believe in the future because we want to sing in the present. The planet is rich enough to allow ten billion humans to live well if we preserve its biodiversity and know how to live in harmony with other species.

Our struggles today must bring us closer to the society of tomorrow.

If global warming is not drastically curbed, it will cause massive droughts and global famines. So that humanity does not disappear like a bankrupt company, we invite you to sign this appeal and to have others sign it in order to make a date by saying that the medium and long term solution is on the side of a society of gratuity, emancipated from the constraint of « always more » economic wealth and power over other humans, other living beings and the planet.

So that humanity does not disappear like a bankrupt company, we invite you to sign and to have signed this appeal in order to demand, from now on, the end of the Great Unnecessary Projects imposed (from the NDDL airport to Europacity through the Grand Prix de France de F1), a drastic reduction of the working time (to work less to work all better), the generalization of the commons and of free access (to public transport, school canteens, cultural and funeral services), a drastic reduction of inequalities of income and wealth, a broadening of democracy to move towards more autonomy and empowerment of people.

Everything must be rethought within the framework of the critique of growth because the degrowth that we support does not mean doing the same thing in less, it is not the praise of sacrifice, it is already building an ecology of incomes with a decent minimum and maximum and returning to bearable rates of deduction from nature, it is offering a future in a world that no longer offers one

We, ecologists, alterglobalists, degrowth activists, growth objectors in love with the good life, call for a common approach to build a project of transition towards a society of a‑growth, just and democratic. We will have to express our will to get closer, in order to create a movement of ideas rich in its diversity, to network our competences and alternatives, to take initiatives, to initiate resistances, and to prepare convergences with all those who oppose the coming barbarism.
